Harpie shared recently a TEDtalk by one of the modern design masters Stefan Sagmeister:


what striked me the most was the fun that comes from the surprise of discovering stuff that's out of your expectations. as in the case of the refreshed new york subway stickers, he described, "nobody ever looks at these signs, you're really bored in the subway and you kind of stare at something and it takes you awhile until you realise it says something different from what normally says..." that's when your subway trips suddenly become more fun, because you are constantly playing "spot the difference" along the way.

and for the "collaborative street graffiti" (speech bubbles on the street posters), i think it's fun for the designer who paste the blank speech bubbles; it's probably more fun for the participants who spot the stickers and decide to be "partners-in-crime" and fill in the blanks. and it's very funny for the passers-by who see the poster put out of context and wonder who the hell were the jokers who created this fun (and in their mind, imagined what they would have written). the entire process is so engaging and dynamic! and fun!

then again, what's happy for some people may not be happy for others. for example the new york subway authorities and the advertisers of the advertorial posters. oh well... :p

the main concept of the exhibition is about collecting dreams, so we invited our guests at the booth to share their dreams with us. they wrote down their dreams on a speech bubble that we provided and took a picture with their dreams.

for our event. The room for our event was right beside Il Lido, the famous italian restaurant. We didn't go there for lunch. At the entrance of the restaurant, there are many nice Kartell furniture! Took a peak inside and saw more designer furniture... Here are some pictures of the furniture outside. We could take our breaks there, and have a good view overlooking the turf.

greatly recommend the last book i read: 'extremely loud and incredibly close' by Jonathan Safran Foer. the main storyline is about a boy who lost his father in the 9/11 terrorist attack and his journey to find out more about his father. there are also other sub plots about the relationships between the different characters in the story. it's supposed to be 'contemporary' according to reviews. i think it's refering to the way the story is presented. first of all, i like that it's a kind of 'experience' books - at first you may not be able to catch the picture clearly, but the chapters keep revealing more and more answers as you read on, such that you go 'orhhh.... where have i read this before' and can't help but flip back to previous chapters to re-read the clues that were left hidden in one of the lines. secondly, there are not only text in the book. there are pictures relating to the story, quite cleverly arranged in the book. but i gotta warn first that the story is so endearing that my tear ducts were uncontrollably active when I was reading it. just drop me a line if you'll like to borrow the book from me :)
